Sculptural Forms - Timothy Thompson
With my first GTI or Graduate teaching internship at MICA winding down, my mind has been on teaching.  My students weren't particularly enthusiastic about the class, and I'm wondering about ways to hedge against that in the future.  Despite what I thought were some pretty interesting assignments from the instructor, most of the students were content to while away their time in class chatting and doodling like they were minimum wage workers concerned only with watching the clock and to borrow a phrase from my own time at the bottom of the employment ladder ,"killing daylight."  Obviously the results of such anemic work days led to some poor finished projects and critique days.

 I'm hoping that switching the class format from assignments to problems might mitigate some of the apathy, but more importantly I want to switch the focus of these problems to be much more relational in terms of the students interests (not aesthetics, sorry Bourriaud).  I think that this relational approach will up the personal investment level in the work and improve finished output. This is where things get tricky for me.  I also want to structure these problems in a way that there are specific material skills learned with each problem.  Finding the right balance between these practical goals and the driving conceptual problem has proven difficult.
